A couple of days ago, I shared some of the notes my daughter passed on to me from her missions class with Professor Chris Dewelt at Ozark Christian College. Today, some more. He challenges his students with a question that needs an answer.
Do we believe that only those who have heard and consciously rejected God are condemned (to hell)?
If we answer that question "Yes," then we have no business getting on the plane, or - at the very least - we better keep our mouths shut about our faith while we share our food and medical relief with the people we visit. Think about it...if a person is going to be condemned to hell only of he or she consciously rejects God, than it is an "injustice" (in Prof. Dewelt's words) to offer them the chance to reject Him! As he says, "If we keep the message of the cross, everybody is in, right?"
But if that were the case, why would Jesus so passionately urge us to spread the news about Him?
Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations,[a] baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you.... (Matthew 28:19-20, NLT)
This is exactly what Prof. Dewelt wants his students to realize. We must share the news about Jesus Christ, crucified and resurrected, and urge all people everywhere to choose to follow Him. The Bible never suggests that people have hope if they don't hear about Jesus. We have to tell the world about Him!
“Salvation comes from our God who sits on the throne and from the Lamb!” (Revelation 7:17, NLT)
So, with Prof. Dewelt, I challenge you...WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE?
